Alike the road transportation, the air transportation in Oman is also developed and well maintained. In total there are 136 airports in Oman, out of which only six airports paved while the others are unpaved. There is one heliport in Oman as well. These airports make air transportation in Oman a reliable mode of communication. The principle paved airports of Oman are Seeb International Airport, Masirah Airport, Thumrait Airport, Khasab Airport, and Salalah Airport. However, the unpaved airports are Firq Airport, Haima Airport, Izki Airport, Fahud Airport, Ghaba Airport, and Marmul Airport. Seeb International Airport: It is located in the capital city of Oman and is the chief airport of this Middle East country. Oman Airports Management Company is the operator of Seeb International Airport. The national carrier of Oman, Oman Air has its base at this airport. This airport is located around 15 kms away from the heart of the capital city. Year 2006 experienced a tremendous increase in the number of passengers, flights and cargo flights. Airlines operating from this airport are EgyptAir, Airblue, Air India, Lufthansa, Jet Airways, Swiss International Air Lines, Thai Airways international and so forth. Martinair Cargo is the major cargo airline operating from Seeb International Airport. Future plans are being plotted for the expansion and modernization of this airport, which would increase the density of flights and air passengers. In the year 2010 this airport of Muscat would witness its first stage of renovation. The various destinations where you can travel from this airport are Karachi, Riyadh, Delhi, Dubai, Cairo, Abu dhabi, Amsterdam, Colombo, Phuket, Sharjah, Dhaka and so forth.
Salalah Airport: Sultanate of Oman's second most significant airport is the Salalah Airport, which is situated on the coastal plain of the city. It is just 5.5 kms away from the heart of the city and caters to the domestic air passengers. However, during the Khareef season this airport of Oman witnesses a tremendous rise in air passengers along with charter flights from the adjoining countries. The chief airlines operating from Salalah Airport are Saudi Arabian Airlines, Jazeera Airways, Air India Express, Oman Air and Gulf Air. Alike the Seeb International Airport, this airport has also been undergoing renovations. Within 2010 it will start serving not less than 10 million passengers.
Khasab Airport: It is a very small airport of Oman from where only two flights operate per week. The largest aircraft that flies from this airport comprises 42 seats only.
