Transportation in Oman

Oman, officially referred to as Sultanate of Oman is a Southwest Asian country with countries like Yemen, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates bordering it. This country of Middle East with its mountainous terrain also includes arid plateaus and plains, encompassing a total area of 309,500 sq km. Most of the cities in Oman have gained popularity due to the tourist destinations. This factor has boasted the transportation in Oman, making all the cities accessible from different niches of the world. The total roadways and highways of Oman cover 32,800kms, out of which 9,840kms are paved and 22,960kms are unpaved.
The roadways stretching from Nazwa to Salalah, Suhar to Muscat and Muscat to Buraymi are newly added. Moving from one place to another, using the roadways of Oman is quite easy due to the prevalence of ample public transport system. Apart from the state-run buses, there are mini-buses, metered cabs, taxis, and hired cars available throughout the country. Due to the irregular terrains Oman misses out on one of the major transportation that is railways. Construction of railway system in Oman is in the pipeline and will be carried out in the near future.

There are a number of ports witnessed throughout the country, namely the Salalah Port, Mina’s Qabus, Mina’s al-Fahl, and Sohar Port. Basically, these ports of Oman cater to the export and import sector of the country. If Mina’s al-Fahl port is known for exporting the crude oil of Oman then Mina’s Qabus port has earned recognition for handling regional and international ships. Along with strong roadways and waterways, Oman has been bestowed with well served air transportation system as well. In total, this Middle East nation holds approximately 136 airports, among which only 6 airports in Oman have paved runways.



Seeb International Airport, Masirah Airport, Thumrait Airport, Khasab Airport, and Salalah Airport are the principle airports of Oman. Among all these, the Seeb International Airport with its base at Muscat is the most important airport of the country. Besides serving the domestic flights and the national carrier, the Seeb International Airport is known for serving various international flights like Kuwait Airways, Swiss Air, KLM, British Airways and Emirates. Oman also has a heliport.
