Festivals of Oman

The culture of Oman is one of the most renowned and significant one among the Gulf countries. Starting from its music to clothing and cuisine to festival, everything has its own importance. Festivals of Oman play a major role in uplifting the country's culture. These festivals of Oman also bring forth the historical backdrop and tradition in front of the indigenous residents as well as international tourists. Secular holidays and festivals are handful compared to the religious ones, whose dates are fixed by the holy book of Muslims. The National Day of Oman is the only major secular festival, celebrated on the birthday of Sultan Qaboos. During the festivals which are religious in nature, neighboring families and relatives are invited and grand celebrations take place. National Day: This jubilation is carried out on the 18th of November as a celebration of Sultan Qaboos's birthday as well as the country's. The venue for the national celebration of this festival is shifted every respective year. Apart from lighting up each and every niche of the country, Oman witnesses traditional dancing, trade exhibitions, camel races, fireworks and other programs. Entire nation is decorated with Omani flag and posters and images of the Sultan.

Ramadan: The entire month when Muslims do fasting from dawn to dusk is referred to as Ramadan. This is one of the most significant festivities of the Muslims. During this festival its illegal for the non-Muslims as well as Muslims to drink, eat and smoke in public places. Most of the eateries are kept closed throughout this festival.

Eid Al Fitr: This festival follows the Ramadan festival. Just before the dawn, the celebration of Eid begins and starts the grand celebration for Muslims. After the prayer, held at different grounds, people get-together or visit family friends, relatives and neighbors. Gifts, sweets and fruits are the main things that are exchanged among families.

Muscat Festival: People from all over the globe visit this Middle East country for being a part of this festival and witness the culture and heritage of Sultanate of Oman. In different parts of the city, several sporting events, music and theatre performances, traditional activities and exhibitions are held. These cater entertainment not only to the elderly crowd or tourists but also to the children.

There are some other festivals as well which are religious in nature, namely Mouloud, Eid al-Adha, Leilat al-Meiraj and Al-Hijra. All these festivals are celebrated with great pomp and show in the various cities of Oman.
